Channels and the Gateway

Payment Hub Architecture, Lesson 2 of 8, Narration 1:59, D09 Payment architecture and technology

Host to hostGatewayAPI

What you will learn

Your objective. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain channels and the gateway. Channels are the places where a payment starts.

Why it matters. This matters because the architecture decides what the bank can build, how fast it can change, and where a payment can fail. Most payment requirements live in the architecture.

Chapter objective: Learner designs a payment hub architecture, explaining intake, validation, routing, transformation, screening, and settlement modules, and maps a payment through each module. Learner applies this skill in realistic banking scenarios, with clear examples and correct terminology throughout.

Key learning points

  • Channels: places where payment starts
  • Payment instruction
  • Critical piece
  • De-duplication
  • Rate limiting

Key terms

Host to host: A direct file or API connection between a corporate customer system and its bank, used to send payment files and receive status reports.

Gateway: A service that connects a merchant website or app to payment networks and acquirers. It encrypts card data, routes authorisation requests, and returns the result to the merchant.

API: Application programming interface, a set of rules that lets one software system call another system to request data or trigger an action.

Practise this lesson

Exercise

Read ch48s1 Hub components: what a hub is and what it contains. Then trace a EUR 100,000 supplier payment from the online banking channel to the rail.

ch48s1 covers channels, the gateway, the hub core, and routing. The gateway validates and enriches. The hub core routes by currency, amount and urgency.

  1. What to do. Name each component the payment passes through and what it does, and name the rail for a EUR 100,000 euro payment to Germany.

Correct result. Online banking captures the instruction. The gateway validates the format and enriches the beneficiary details. The hub core checks limits and sanctions and routes by currency and amount. A EUR 100,000 euro payment to Germany goes through T2 as a SEPA Credit Transfer.

Why. The gateway is the door, the hub is the building. A gateway validates and converts, but it never routes, screens or settles.

Practice question

What is the difference between a gateway and a payment hub?

Takeaway and next step

What to remember

Read ch48s1 for the full treatment, including the routing decision that sends each payment to the right rail or correspondent.

Send a payment through the hub and watch it pass each component named in this lesson.

This topic now lives in ch48s1 Hub components: what a hub is and what it contains, which is the master lesson for the payment hub. Channels are the places where a payment starts, and the gateway is the component that receives instructions from all channels, converts them into a single internal format, validates the message structure, rejects malformed instructions and checks for duplicates. Read ch48s1 for the full treatment, including the routing decision that sends each payment to the right rail or correspondent.

Scene timestamps are estimated by allocating the narration text proportionally across the real audio length. The audio playback position is the source of truth: pause freezes the visual, seeking restores the correct scene, replay restarts the scene animation.
